Dagmar - red - bookmark - Tanja Skudstrup (TS)
Dagmar - red bookmark - Tanja Skudstrup (TS) is an embroidery kit with a narrow and colourful ornamental motif. The bookmark has warm red shades combined with green, black and golden details. The motif is dense and decorative, while the small format also makes the embroidery project manageable.
The motif takes its inspiration from the iconic Dagmar Cross – a unique Byzantine enamel cross from the 11th century, which is now held at the National Museum of Denmark. Inspired by the cross’s richly detailed ornamentation and harmonious geometric structure, Tanja Skudstrup has interpreted the historical expression as a simple cross-stitch motif with a modern touch.
A bookmark with historical ornaments and warm colours
The motif is built up as a narrow, vertical composition. The red shades fill much of the centre and add warmth and character to the bookmark. Green fields, black forms and golden lines create contrast and highlight the individual ornaments.
Along the full length of the bookmark are small dots, crosses, geometric fields and curved pattern elements. The many details are arranged in a rhythmic structure that suits the long format beautifully. Each small field forms part of a larger whole and brings to mind historical jewellery, enamel work and decorative borders.
The dark background in parts of the pattern creates depth, while the golden edges and small light stitches make the individual forms clear. The colour combination has a warm, almost jewel-like character, emphasising the connection to the ornamentation of the Dagmar Cross.
The name Dagmar therefore refers not only to a historical period. It also says something about the designer’s inspiration and the wish to carry Danish cultural-historical design language forward into a modern embroidery design.
A repeatable pattern with many possibilities
One of the special strengths of the Dagmar design is that the ornament is built as a repeatable pattern. The bookmark shows one possible use, but the motif can also be used as the starting point for other personal embroidery projects.
For example, the pattern can be repeated on bracelets, belts, bag straps, decorative edges on clothing, cushions, tablecloths and other textile projects. The graphic ornament works particularly beautifully on denim, linen and other natural materials, where historical design language meets modern textiles.
Tanja Skudstrup highlights this freedom as an important part of the Dagmar series. The embroiderer can choose to follow the instructions and stitch the bookmark shown, or use the individual ornaments as the beginning of their own project.
The option to repeat, combine and adapt the pattern makes the design both flexible and timeless. It invites creativity and personal solutions, while preserving the connection to the Dagmar Cross and Danish cultural history.
A small embroidery project with many details
The finished Dagmar - red bookmark measures 4 × 24 cm. The format makes it suitable as a smaller embroidery project, while the motif still contains many fine colour changes and ornaments that create variation along the way.
At both ends, the bookmark is finished with fringes. This gives the finished embroidery a classic and textile character, while also emphasising the practical function of the bookmark.
