A graphic cushion project with elks
"Elge" (Elks) - cushion - Marianne Thornberg (MT) is a decorative cross stitch embroidery featuring a repeated elk motif. The design shows elks arranged in rows across the cushion. Each elk has a clear silhouette with large antlers, a long body and a simple graphic shape. The motif has a Nordic expression where nature and pattern work together beautifully.
The embroidery is built as a repeating pattern. The elks all face the same direction and are arranged in staggered horizontal rows, creating a calm rhythm across the surface. At the same time, the different colours add variation to the motif. The result is an embroidery that feels both simple and lively.
The cushion has a modern appearance, yet the motif still maintains a strong connection to nature. The elk is a powerful Nordic animal, and here it is transformed into a decorative design element. This makes the cushion especially suitable for homes where needlework, nature-inspired motifs and graphic patterns are appreciated.
Colours, repetition and Nordic atmosphere
The colours play an important role in the overall expression. The motif includes elks stitched in blue, green, pale blue, pink and purple shades. Some colours are dark and bold, while others are softer and more muted. Together they create a balanced colour palette that keeps the motif from feeling heavy.
The repeated elks form a surface with clear structure. The antlers add movement to the pattern because they break up the calmer body shapes. At the same time, the pale spaces between the figures create openness and lightness. This makes the motif easy to read, even though the entire surface is filled with embroidery.
The size of 42 x 45 cm makes the cushion ideal for a sofa, armchair or bed. It can be used alone as a colourful statement piece or combined with plain cushions and other embroidered textiles. The motif pairs especially well with interiors featuring natural materials, wood, wool and light fabrics.
Haandarbejdets Fremme and materials
The embroidery is stitched with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme (HF) linen fabric 10B. The linen provides the cushion with a classic and natural background. Danish Flower Thread adds a lively quality to the many colours, perfectly complementing the graphic elk motif.
Haandarbejdets Fremme is known for embroidery designs of high quality and clear motifs. In this design, that tradition appears in a more modern and pattern-based form. Marianne Thornberg has created a motif where repetition, colour and animal forms combine into a strong textile expression.
Elks is especially suitable for the lightly experienced embroiderer. The motif is large, yet the repeated pattern makes the stitching process manageable. There are many colour sections, but the overall shapes remain clear and easy to follow. The finished result is a cushion filled with Nordic atmosphere, graphic calmness and a distinctive embroidered expression for the home.
