Blomsterbed Årets Flora – clutch – Edith Hansen (EH)

The Year In Cross Stitch 1988

"Blomsterbed Årets Flora" (Flower Bed Flora of the Year) is a colourful embroidery kit designed by Edith Hansen. The motif spreads across the entire front of the clutch like a dense and lively flower bed, where different flowers, leaves and fine green stems grow among one another. This gives the embroidery a lush expression with many small details to discover.

The colour palette is both fresh and harmonious. Clear red, blue, pink and yellow flowers stand out among the many green shades, while the light linen forms a calm background. The finished embroidery measures 20 × 13 cm and becomes a decorative clutch with a motif that almost feels like a small floral picture.

A lush flower bed filled with colour

The motif is composed as a dense flower bed without one single flower as the central focus. Instead, the eye moves around between the many different flowers and plants.

Several striking red flowers create strong focal points throughout the motif. They are complemented by large blue flowers with long, slender petals and smaller blue details, which add a cooler contrast to the warm red and yellow tones.

The yellow flowers appear in several sizes and forms and are distributed throughout the motif. Some stand as clear flower heads on green stems, while others sit closer to the base and help create the sense of a flower bed at different heights.

Pink flowers add a softer colour tone, including on the right side of the motif, where larger pink flowers meet the stronger red shades. Here and there, small light flowers and discreet details bind the larger elements together.

Green stems and leaves bring the motif to life

Between the flowers grows an abundance of green stems, leaves and small plant shoots. Some stand upright and straight, while others bend across the motif or wind between the flowers.

The different green shades create depth and variation and make the flower bed feel dense and natural. Small leaves, fine stems and scattered details fill the spaces without making the motif feel heavy.

The composition continues almost all the way to the edges of the clutch, so the motif feels like a section of a larger flower bed. This gives the embroidery a lively and immediate expression that suits the simple clutch shape beautifully.

Embroidered with Danish Flower Thread

Flower Bed is embroidered with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme Linen 10B. Danish Flower Thread is known for its matte surface and harmonious colour shades, making it especially well suited to botanical motifs.

Here, the many green, yellow, blue, pink and red tones of the thread are shown to full effect. The colours work together without becoming too strong and support Edith Hansen’s characteristic floral universe.

Linen 10B also gives the embroidery the classic texture associated with Haandarbejdets Fremme embroideries and forms a light, natural background for the many colours.

Edith Hansen and Haandarbejdets Fremme

Through her work with embroidery design, Edith Hansen has created many motifs where flowers, colours and decorative forms play a central role. In "Flower Bed Flora of the Year", it is precisely the diversity that makes the motif special: large and small flowers, different growth forms and an abundance of colours come together in one cohesive composition.

Haandarbejdets Fremme’s tradition of fine materials, carefully considered colour combinations and classic embroidery craftsmanship is clearly expressed in this kit.

Flower Bed Flora of the Year - clutch - Edith Hansen (EH) is an ideal project for those who love floral embroidery, many colours and motifs with plenty of details. The finished result is both a decorative piece of embroidery and a personal clutch, where Edith Hansen’s lush flower bed is allowed to take centre stage.
