A small motif with outdoor life and play
Windmill and Kite - wall piece - Gerda Bengtsson (GB) is a small cross stitch embroidery featuring a lively outdoor scene. The motif shows a windmill on the left side, green trees in the background and a red kite flying above the landscape. At the bottom, people are gathered in the greenery, where both children and adults take part in the scene.
The embroidery has a clear everyday atmosphere. A person dressed in blue stands in the centre of the motif holding the kite string. The red kite rises above the trees and brings movement to the image. On the right side stands a figure in a red top pointing towards the kite. This makes the scene easy to read and full of activity.
At the bottom, a small family sits together at a table or bench. A pram stands nearby, adding a warm and homely feeling to the motif. The scene feels like a small moment from an outing where several generations are gathered outdoors.
Windmill, trees and storytelling details
The windmill on the left creates a calm frame around the motif. It is stitched in light shades with darker details defining the sails and structure. Together with the green bushes and trees, it gives the design a rural character.
The many green shades tie the picture together. The motif includes low bushes, tall fir trees and a larger rounded tree at the lower right. The green areas create calmness around the small figures, while the red, blue and brown details stand out clearly against the pale background.
Although the motif measures only 13 x 13 cm, it contains many small stories. There is kite flying, people resting at a bench, movement in the landscape and a windmill in the background. This makes the wall piece especially suitable for embroiderers who enjoy small motifs filled with life and detail.
Haandarbejdets Fremme and materials
The embroidery is stitched with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme (HF) linen fabric 10B. The linen provides a classic and calm background for the motif’s many small elements. Danish Flower Thread gives the colours a lively appearance, allowing the trees, people, windmill and kite to stand out clearly.
Haandarbejdets Fremme is known for embroidery designs of high quality and clear motifs. In this design, that tradition appears in a small and practical format. Gerda Bengtsson has created a motif where only a few stitches form an entire scene filled with landscape, people and movement.
Windmill and Kite is especially suitable for the lightly experienced embroiderer. The motif is small, yet it contains several colour changes and fine details. The small figures require attention, as do the windmill, kite and green trees. In return, the finished result is a charming wall piece with playfulness, family life and classic embroidery in a compact format.
