Moreltræ - wall piece - Gerda Bengtsson (GB)
There is a special calm in this small motif. A Morello cherry tree stands in the centre of the picture with its brown trunk, green leaves and small yellow cherries glowing among the branches. Beneath the tree stand a fox, a rooster and a hen. In the real world, such an encounter would probably develop quickly, but here there is no hunt and no escape. Instead, the motif becomes a peaceful and almost fairy-tale-like scene, where animals and birds stand together under the crown of the tree.
A Morello cherry tree with yellow cherries
The motif shows a Morello cherry tree with a clear brown trunk that divides into many fine branches. The branches spread upwards through the picture and form a light, rounded crown. The leaves sit scattered among the branches in green and grey-green shades. They give the tree fullness, without making the motif feel dense or heavy.
Among the leaves are the small yellow Morello cherries. They are embroidered as fine, warm points of colour, making the tree feel alive and fruit-bearing. The cherries are small, but they have great importance for the atmosphere of the motif. They tell us that the tree is in the middle of its fruiting season, and they give the embroidery a mild, summery expression.
The simple form of the tree makes the motif easy to read. At the same time, there are many small details in the leaves, branches and fruits, which make the embroidery interesting to work on.
A peaceful scene with fox, rooster and hen
Beneath the Morello cherry tree, a small brown fox can be seen on the left. It stands calmly on the green ground and turns its gaze towards the tree and the other animals. To the right stand a rooster and a hen. The rooster is recognisable by its clear tail and more distinctive form, while the hen stands beside it as a calmer figure.
What makes the motif special is precisely that the fox is not hunting, and the rooster and hen are not fleeing. Instead, they share the same small space beneath the Morello cherry tree. This gives the embroidery a peaceful and almost fable-like atmosphere. The motif can be read as a small story about calm, balance and peace in nature, where animals that would normally be wary of one another stand side by side for a moment.
The small flowers and grass details at the bottom underline the feeling of a garden, farmyard or quiet corner of nature. The finished wall piece therefore becomes more than a motif with a fruit tree and animals. It becomes a small scene with its own story.
