Skovens bær - wall piece - Gerda Bengtsson (GB)

A botanical wall piece with forest berries

"Skovens bær" (Forest Berries) - wall piece - Gerda Bengtsson (GB) is a detailed cross stitch embroidery featuring different berry plants as its motif. The design shows small branches, leaves, flowers, red and blue berries, and delicate roots spread across the surface. The motif has a light botanical expression, where each plant appears as a small study of forest vegetation.

The embroidery is built up from several separate plant groups. Some branches carry red berries, while others feature dark blue berries, small pink flowers or yellow blossoms. Several of the plants are shown with stems, leaves and roots. This gives the motif a natural and botanical character, where the plants are presented as complete forms.

The open composition gives the wall piece a calm appearance. The plants are not gathered into a dense wreath or bouquet. Instead, they appear as small motifs on the light background. This makes the embroidery airy and pleasant to look at, even with its many details.

Berries, leaves and small flowers

The colours are mainly held in green shades. The many leaves create unity throughout the motif. The red, blue, pink and yellow details add variation and life. The small berries stand out clearly among the leaves, while the flowers give the motif a soft and summery expression.

Some plants have delicate creeping roots, while others have more upright branches and stronger leaves. This creates a pleasing rhythm within the design. The eye moves from the smaller plants at the top to the larger berry branches in the centre and lower areas. Each section has its own form, but the green tones tie the whole composition together.

The finished wall piece measures 52 x 61 cm, making it well suited as a striking botanical embroidery for the home. It can hang alone as a calm nature motif or be combined with other plant and berry designs from Haandarbejdets Fremme.

Haandarbejdets Fremme and materials

The motif is stitched with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme (HF) linen fabric 10B. The linen creates a classic and calm background for the many small details. Danish Flower Thread gives the leaves, berries and flowers a lively play of colour.

Haandarbejdets Fremme is known for embroidery designs of high quality and a clear botanical design language. In this wall piece, that tradition can be seen in the precise rendering of leaves, berries, stems and roots. Gerda Bengtsson has created a motif where forest plants are allowed to stand simply and clearly on their own.

Forest Berries is especially suitable for the experienced embroiderer. The motif contains many subtle colour changes and delicate details. However, the separate plant groups make the work manageable to divide into sections. The finished result is a classic wall piece with forest atmosphere, botanical calmness and a beautiful interplay between green leaves and colourful berries.
