Aalborg - wall piece - Ida Winckler (IW) depicts two of Aalborg’s most distinctive historical buildings in an atmospheric cross-stitch embroidery. The motif shows both Jørgen Olufsen’s House and Hamborggården, which are built directly together and still stand in Aalborg today.

The embroidery brings together architecture, local history and craftsmanship in a motif with a clear sense of place. At the bottom, the composition is finished with a green border bearing the text Aalborg, emphasising the connection to the city.

Jørgen Olufsen’s House and Hamborggården

The stone house on the right is the brick-built Renaissance building that alderman and mayor Jørgen Olufsen had built in 1616. The beautiful gabled house served as a merchant’s house. The large cellar gates and high staircase bear witness to a time when Østerå ran close by as an active harbour.

The half-timbered house on the left is Hamborggården. It is slightly older and dates from around 1600. Jørgen Olufsen’s newer stone house was later added directly to the existing half-timbered wing.

Together, the buildings form one of Denmark’s best-preserved Renaissance complexes. They are located on Østerågade in Aalborg and are an important part of the city’s historic centre.

A motif with half-timbering, gabled house and local history

In the embroidery, the half-timbering of Hamborggården stands out clearly. The dark wooden lines create a clear rhythm against the light and ochre-yellow fields. The windows sit side by side and give the façade calm and balance.

On the right is Jørgen Olufsen’s House, with its tall gable and warm brown tones in the masonry. The small details in the windows, doors, staircase and cellar gates give the motif depth and character. The red roof surface creates contrast to the more subdued colours of the buildings.

The motif does not simply show a beautiful building. It shows a living piece of Aalborg history. Today, Jørgen Olufsen’s House and Hamborggården contain a mixture of restaurants, businesses and private homes. The buildings therefore still function as an active part of the city’s pedestrian street network.
