Bittersød natskygge – doily / napkin – Gerda Bengtsson (GB)

Bittersweet Nightshade is a refined doily / napkin in which Gerda Bengtsson interprets the climbing plant Solanum dulcamara in a closed, harmonious wreath. The motif features the plant’s characteristic violet, star-shaped flowers with yellow stamens as well as the small, elongated red berries. Slender stems and soft leaves create a gentle movement around the central field.

The composition is circular and well balanced. The tendrils weave in and out of one another, forming a natural rhythm. Flowers and berries are distributed with precision, allowing the motif to appear lively without feeling dense. The open centre creates calm and makes the piece well suited as a decorative frame on a set table.

The colour palette is botanically accurate and subdued. Green tones range from light, almost dusty shades to deeper leaf greens. The violet flowers add a cool contrast, while the red berries provide small, clear accents. The overall impression is harmonious and calm.

Danish Flower Thread gives the motif a matte and nuanced surface, and the depth of colour supports the plant’s fine details. The linen from Haandarbejdets Fremme adds texture and warmth. Together, the materials ensure a classic expression with a high level of craftsmanship.

The doily / napkin works both as a single decorative element and repeated around a table setting. It suits retailers seeking smaller formats with a strong botanical identity. Bittersweet Nightshade appeals to customers with an interest in nature motifs and the classic Danish embroidery tradition.
