Nissegrød - wall hanging - Ida Winckler (IW)

"Nissegrød" (Elf Porridge) - wall hanging - Ida Winckler (IW) is an embroidery kit with a small and humorous Christmas motif. Three elves are gathered around a large bowl of porridge, while small golden stars float above them.
The motif is simple and compact. The red elf hats give it a clear Christmas character, while the dark blue shades and warm-toned bowl of porridge create contrast against the light linen background.
The embroidery is stitched with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme linen 10B. The finished wall hanging measures just 12 x 9 cm, making it ideal as a small Christmas picture.

Three elves gathered around the porridge

At the centre of the motif is a large bowl of porridge. The bowl is embroidered in warm brown and golden shades and becomes the natural focal point of the design.
Around the bowl sit or stand three small elves. All wear red hats, but their positions vary. The middle figure stands directly behind the porridge, while the other two flank the bowl on either side.
The elves’ outfits are worked in dark blue shades. This creates a fine contrast with both the red hats and the warm colour of the porridge. Their small light faces make the figures easy to distinguish, even though the motif is very small.
The composition is almost symmetrical. This creates calm and makes the motif easy to read at first glance.

Small golden stars add a Christmas glow

Above the elves are three small golden stars. They add lightness to the motif and create space above the closely grouped figures.
The golden shade of the stars is repeated in the porridge, bringing the colour palette together. The small details are subtle, but they help emphasise the Christmas theme.
The light linen background plays an important role in the design. There is plenty of space around the figures, allowing even the few elements to stand out clearly.

A small Christmas motif with classic Nordic elf humour

Elf Porridge is based on a familiar Nordic Christmas tradition in which the household elf is associated with a bowl of porridge. Ida Winckler has transformed this story into a small embroidery with a few clear forms.
This makes the motif cosy without feeling crowded. There is no large Christmas setting. Instead, the focus is on the three elves and their shared bowl.
The finished wall hanging measures 12 x 9 cm. The format makes it suitable for a small wall, a gallery wall or as part of a collection of other small Christmas embroideries.
It can also make a fine gift for someone who loves elves, classic Christmas decorations or small embroidery projects.

Danish Flower Thread on linen 10B

The embroidery is stitched with Danish Flower Thread. The thread gives the red, blue, brown and golden shades a soft and classic expression.
The fabric is Haandarbejdets Fremme linen 10B. The fine structure suits the small format well and makes it possible to work with the tiny details in the faces, hats, outfits and stars.
With "Nissegrød" (Elf Porridge), Ida Winckler has created a small motif where a simple Christmas scene tells the whole story. Haandarbejdets Fremme’s classic materials support the traditional expression and make the embroidery ideal for bringing out again every December.
