Nyhavn – doily / napkin – Ida Winckler (IW) & Gerda Bengtsson (GB)

This doily / napkin is decorated with an atmospheric embroidery of Nyhavn in Copenhagen. The motif shows the well-known houses along the harbour, where the narrow buildings stand side by side with their characteristic gables and colourful facades.

At the centre of the design appears the row of houses along the quay. The tall buildings are embroidered in a range of colours—greens, blues and warm golden tones—together forming a lively cityscape. The windows appear in regular rows across the facades, while the steep gables create a clear architectural rhythm within the motif.

In front of the houses the quay and a small boat can be seen resting on the water in the canal. The simple boat provides balance in the composition and emphasises the maritime atmosphere that characterises Nyhavn.

The entire scene is framed by a decorative border of winding vine branches. The green leaves form a light and elegant frame around the city motif and give the embroidery a classic appearance. At the bottom centre the name Nyhavn appears, highlighting the motif’s connection to one of Copenhagen’s most recognisable places.

The embroidery is worked in cross stitch with Danish Flower Thread on linen. The fine stitches emphasise both the colours of the houses and the small details in the vine leaves. As a doily / napkin, the embroidery becomes a decorative element in the table setting.
