Strandskaller - cushion - Marianne Thornberg (MT)
"Strandskaller" (Seashells) - cushion - Marianne Thornberg (MT) is an embroidery kit with a light and maritime motif, where different seashells, sea snail shells and shell forms are gathered on a light linen background. The motif has a calm summer feeling that brings to mind walks by the sea, fresh sea air and small finds in the sand. The many forms and colours give the cushion a lively expression, while the overall impression remains light, airy and elegant.
A motif with seashells and sea snail shells
The motif consists of several different seashells in varied forms. There are large shell forms, elongated sea snail shells, spiral-shaped shells and smaller decorative shells along the edge. The large shells in the centre give the motif weight, while the small shells along the edge of the cushion create a fine frame around the composition.
The colours are kept in sea-inspired shades of blue, turquoise, pale aqua, sand, golden, purple, pink and coral red. The large blue shell at the bottom centre stands as a striking focal point, while the warm coral and sand-coloured shells add sun and seaside atmosphere to the motif. The purple and pink details give the cushion a soft colour variation, making the motif feel more alive.
Several of the shells are embroidered with fine lines, shadows and colour shifts, giving the forms depth. You get the sense of ridges, spirals and the small structures that make seashells interesting to collect and examine more closely. The motif is decoratively interpreted, but still clearly inspired by nature’s own forms.
A maritime cushion with a light and summery atmosphere
The finished cushion measures 40 x 40 cm. The square format suits the structure of the motif well, with the large shells gathered in the centre and the smaller shells forming a light border around the edge. A fine blue line frames the motif and emphasises the cushion’s maritime expression.
Seashells is well suited to a summer house, a light living room, a bench, a garden room or any space where you want a cushion with a calm seaside atmosphere. It can also be combined with other cushions in blue, sand-coloured or pale natural tones, if you want a cohesive coastal-inspired interior.
The cushion is embroidered with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme linen 10B. The linen provides a classic and light background, where the many shells stand out clearly. Danish Flower Thread gives the colours a soft and textile expression, so the blue, golden, purple and coral-coloured shades gain a natural warmth.
