The Pantomime Theatre and Tivoli for the whole family
Tivoli – doily / napkin – Gerda Bengtsson (GB) is a small cross stitch embroidery with a colourful motif from Tivoli. The design shows the Pantomime Theatre in the background with green trees on both sides. In front of the building, young people, children and older visitors are out for a walk. This gives the scene a clear family atmosphere. Tivoli appears as a place where several generations meet around the same experience.
The Pantomime Theatre in Copenhagen is stitched in warm red, orange and pink colours. The building has towers, roof details and a dark stage opening in the centre. The green trees frame the motif and bring calm around the lively building. At the bottom, the small figures walk past in different directions. They create movement in the motif and give the embroidery a narrative quality.
One child holds a red balloon, and another child has a green balloon. The balloons are small details, but they are important to the atmosphere. They emphasise the joy, anticipation and playful expression. At the same time, they add extra colour to the scene. The motif is therefore not only a picture of a building. It is also a small moment from a day in Tivoli.
Haandarbejdets Fremme and materials
The embroidery is stitched with Danish Flower Thread on Haandarbejdets Fremme (HF) linen fabric 12B. The linen provides a classic and calm background for the many colours. Danish Flower Thread adds a lively expression to the building, figures, trees and balloons. The combination works well for a small motif where every colour matters.
Haandarbejdets Fremme is known for embroidery designs of high quality and clear motifs. This design shows that tradition in a small square format. Gerda Bengtsson has created a motif where a few stitches form an entire scene. The small people are an important part of the expression. They show Tivoli as a place for children, adults and older visitors alike.
The finished doily / napkin measures 14 × 14 cm. The small format makes the motif easy to frame, yet it still feels rich in content. The many people and colours create a larger story than the size suggests, which makes the embroidery especially charming. The motif can be used as a beautiful wall piece. It can also be displayed together with other small embroideries featuring city life, people or well-known places.
Tivoli is especially suitable for the lightly experienced embroiderer. The motif is small, but there are many colour fields and small details. The figures require attention, and the building includes several contrasts. In return, the work creates a charming result. The finished embroidery has nostalgia, family atmosphere and classic Danish motif appeal.
